Humor, Play, and Laughter

During much of our training as spiritual care givers, we learn about interventions that grow our listening skills and give space for engaging in serious explorations about God. However, less attention is given to interventions such as humor, play, and laughter, because they are often thought of as a way to build rapport or as a vehicle to something else. In this session, we will explore overall the theological draw of these interventions, evaluate the benefits and drawbacks, explore possibilities for their use in our pastoral relationships, and identify some ways that we can draw out the inner child of ourselves and those we serve.

Special Guest: James Denham

James Denham has served Texas Children’s Hospital for nearly 11 years, primarily providing family and staff support in the PICU and Heart Center ICU. En route to his ministry at Texas Children’s, James received his B.A. at Pepperdine University and his M.Div. at Abilene Christian University before completing his CPE residency through Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center. However, he is a Southern Californian at heart, as he was born and raised there, and it is where he initially learned his love for the outdoors, the beach, hiking, and disc golf. James now calls Houston home with his wife, Liz, and their son, Ryan (8). The passion he brings for the ministry of pediatric chaplaincy, which emerges out of his own parenthood and identity as a wounded healer and enneagram 9, embraces his value for meaning making, resilience, play, and intentionality in spirituality.
